CONDOR WATCHING

Birds, flying in freedom, fill our hearts with joy. Among them there is the king of the Andes - the Condor. It is almost three and a half meters and it can stay still in the air for several hours always impressing the watcher with its skill and elegance. It is a bird of prey, gregarious, which dwells high in the Andes rocks. Man has always been delighted and impressed by its majesty. But only on rare occasions man can have access to its domain. Mount La Buitrera is one of them.

Excursion to Mount La Buitrera (at extra charge)

We leave the Hotel in 4x4 vehicles with ecotourism skilled guides, after going through the Austral Andes we go towards the South East of the National Park surrounded by Andine bush. After 35 Km. we are at Estancia El Desafio. After visiting its manor, feedlot sheds and the rest of its facilities the ascent towards the condor kingdom starts. Once there, after crossing a high forest at 1,650 m. above sea level, you will witness one of the most spectacular and thrilling events of nature: the flight of these giants of the air.

TREKKING (transfer included)

Walking along natural trails or trekking has become a very popular sport in the last years. A rucksack, a sleeping bag, warm clothes is all you need to go up and down the National Park trails and slopes. It is important to be aware of the challenges of each trek, the weather forecast and to be accompanied by a mountain guide. There are countless trails in Nahuel Huapi National Park. It is recommended to stay overnight at Club Andino Bariloche mountain lodges. You will be able to get supplies and sleep in a very special environment.
The best known treks are:

LAGO GUTIERREZ TREKKING (Refugio Frey)

It starts at Lago Gutiérrez auto camping at the end of the pebbled road that leads to Villa Los Coihues. From the camping follow the horses' trails. It is important not to take the wrong diversions. The trail gets away from the lake to the old road from Catedral. Parallel to the lake and keeping it on the left, follow the trail up to a sign that reads "Picada Eslovena", on an open area (ancient meeting point for carts and tractors). The trail goes up to Villa Catedral (on the way down two signs show the way to Villa Catedral and Lago Gutiérrez). Duration: 5 hours.

JAKOB LAKE TREKKING (Laguna Negra)

This is a more challenging trek. It requires elementary climbing techniques and safety ropes or ice equipment may be necessary. A mountain guide is recommended and can be hired at the Hotel. From this lodge we go to Los Témpanos lagoon and then start a North slope climb towards Refugio Peak back summit. This is the toughest part of the trail and in some parts requires climbing. The usual trail covers the central part of the slope with some diversions to the sides. From the summit there is an awe inspiring view of the area. The summit is reached after crossing between two rock towers. The trail goes then along a path with many loose rocks, stones and pebbles to reach the summit of Cerro Inocentes. When reaching the second slope, climb down a few meters towards Navidad lagoon and then reach a depression close to this mountain. After walking 500 mts. on the summit, there is a canyon that leads to Vivac Rock, at the beginning of Negra lagoon trail. This trail leads to Manfredo Segre lodge. Duration: between 5 and 7 hours.

LAGUNA NEGRA TREKKING (CAB Lagoon - Azul Lagoon - Mascardi Lake). A two day trek along no trail areas. From Negra Lagoon, follow its North shores and climb towards the depression on the North side of Cerro Negro. Go down to the upper part of the valley in the direction of an affluent of Lluvuco stream, then follow up to the stream in the main valley. After crossing the stream, climb up crossing canes and forests until you reach CAB lagoon. After 100 mts. on its East shore, covered in "ñires" go uphill towards the rocky and pebbled slope along the dry basin of some little stream. Then at the top of cerro CAB, come down again up to an open area that is always good for camping. Duration: approximately 10 hours .

On the second day, climb towards a slope of the summit that comes from

Mt Bonete. When the main top has been reached, get down the opposite side to Cretton lagoon from this place, after a soft and not too steep slope the summit encloses Azul lagoon. From this place, following the slope of the mountain and after the mouth of the lagoon, always keeping the stream on your left, follow the trail that leads to río Manso, which is crossed by a hanging bridge some 2 km before it flows into Mascardi Lake.

Duration: 8 hours.

RAPPEL (no extra charge)

It is an adventure and mountain activity that consists in descending a very steep natural rock wall on the lake by holding on to a rappel which is fastened to the top. We have all the equipment and skilled professionals for this activity. It targets children and adults, no previous experience required. (Daily activity at the Hotel)
