THE ITAIPU LAKE

In 1982 the flood gates of the bypass canal of the Itaipu hydroelectric power station were closed and the lake began to fill up. Today it covers an area of 1350 km² and is on average 22 m deep, and 170m deep near the dam wall. 66 small islands have not been covered with water, 44 on the Brazilian side and 22 on the Paraguayan side.

The lake created a number of economic opportunities which are gradually being exploited. Facilities for recreation and relaxation have been developed, which in turn further tourism: Clubs, artificial beaches, mooring facilities, marinas and parks. These investments attract thousands of visitors per year, who come to take part in regional festivals, sport competitions and cultural events.
The formation of the lake not only changed the geographic aspect of the region. The agriculture, which forms the economical foundation of the area, is gradually giving way to tourist activities.
The Itaipu lake delivers the water for the large turbines of the power station, but it also forms the base for the preservation of fauna and flora of the region. Along its sides stretch 2 reserves and 5 biological rehabilitation centres covering a total area of 35 858 hectares. Around the reserves is a protective belt of reforestation of 63 376 hectares and 13 million trees to avoid pollution and silting up.
