WHAT TO TAKE
You will be on the move a great deal, so our advice is to pack as
lightly as possible. Most people automatically assume that the weather
is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the
Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night.
We recommend the use of a big backpack (around 80 litres) and a
good size daypack is also essential.
Day backpack / First-aid kit** / Fleece top / Sunblock / Windproof-waterproof
jacket / Sunglasses / Small towel and swim wear / Toiletries (biodegradable)
/ 4 shirts ort-shirts / Watch or alarm clock / Sun hat / Water bottle
/1 pair of shorts / 2 pairs of long trousers / Pocket knife / 1
pair hiking pants/track pants / Flashlight / Money belt / Sturdy
walking shoes
Big backpack (around 80 litres volume) / Cover for backpacks / Hiking
waterproof boots / Sport sandals / Inner sheet (for sleeping bag)
/ Wool hat, mitts or gloves (preferably waterproof) / Rain poncho
/ Strong plastic bags to help keep gear dry / Sleeping bag (this
can also be hired locally for approximately $10 USD) / Mattress
(a foam mattress is included as part of the hike; however no self
inflating type mattresses are available for hire) / Thermal underwear
/ Insect repellent with a DEET% between 35-75
**First aid kit should contain lip salve, Anti-inflammatory
tablets (e.g. Ibuprofen), Aspirin, Band Aids, anti-histamine, Imodium
or similar tablets for mild cases of diarrhea, re-hydration powder,
Purification tablets or filter and extra prescription drugs you
may be taking.
Optional - Camera and film, reading/writing material,
binoculars.
All other camping equipment is provided for the Inca Trail excursion.
Porters carry the camping gear and food. You will be responsible
for carrying your personal items, such as clothing and sleeping
bags. A porter can be hired locally to assist you carrying these
items if you chose.
Remember that although near the Equator, the higher altitude
on some parts of the trip make for cool evenings and you will
need a warm sweater or pullover. It is best to layer clothes rather
than bring a heavy parka so that you can take layers off. This
is especially true during the cooler months on the Inca Trail
(May to Sept), at which time warmer clothing is essential.
